Activate the Space
John 7:37-39 – On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
I was sitting in a work meeting the other day, talking about merchandising at the cash registers for products that make money, not just take up space. One of the vice presidents looked at everyone and said, “We need to make sure we activate the space, place only items that will be productive in there.”
Activate the Space
This is a great concept for Christians as well.
We have all heard of the concept of the “God-shaped hole.” There is a lot of discussion on whether Blaise Pascal’s concept of the “God-shaped vacuum” in his book Pensees is the first instance of this concept.. He says, “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of every person, and it can never be filled by any created thing. It can only be filled by God, made known through Jesus Christ.”
Regardless of whether one feels that this concept was given to us by Pascal or given to us in the Book of John, it is a very true concept. We have a spot in our souls that craves, yearns, desires to be united with the one, true God.
This space is our soul.
I am not going to go into another blog post about what the soul is. I have already done that at this link. But I do want to emphasize the importance of activating the space in our “innermost person” for God. This is the Christian’s power! Look at 1 Corinthians 1:18
1 Corinthians 1:18 – For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
The world does not understand this power that we have. It believes we are foolish for following Christ. But my question back to the world is, “how is THAT going for you?”
If the world sees our power as foolish and is dying daily, then I can only imagine the philosophies that are being followed that the world thinks good!
It is time for us as Christians to ACTIVATE THE SPACE, that God-shaped hole in our hearts that will bring the power of the risen Christ, the living God, and the Holy Spirit to life in our daily existence. If we as the church humbled ourselves in prayer, fasting, and dedication to God, then we would realize that He is the meaning of life. He is the meaning of peace. He is the meaning comfort. He is the meaning of reconciliation. He is the meaning of love. He is the meaning of good. He is the meaning of all that is holy.
Reach out to Christ.
Take a leap of faith.
Activate the space.
And begin living a life of power that comes only from knowing, TRULY KNOWING, the one, true God.
Amen.
